Wetlands Complex (MWC) On 5/8 2 SANDHILL CRANE colts (young) were seen with the adults on Carncross Road. Oswego County On 5/8 a GREAT EGRET was spotted in the swamp On
Peter Scott Road east of Phoenix. Onondaga County A late report this week included a picture of a
WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL seen at a feeder in Westvale on the west side
of Syracuse on 5/2. Fort Drum (Jefferson County) On 5/8 19 species of warbler were seen on the grounds of Fort Drum near Watertown. For those not familiar, Fort Drum has some of the best birding in our area. However you must get a permit to get into the area. For those interested contact Jeff Bolsinger for information on birds and obtaining a permit. New Migrant seen this week: LEAST SANDPIPER Hotline: Syracuse Rare bird Alert #102 -Tuesday May 6, 2008 Greetings! This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of April 28, 2008 Highlights: AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER (Extralimital) At least 3 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS were reported on a beach in between Southwick Beach and El Dorado State Park on Lake Ontario on 5/4. The birds were not relocated. Not much in the way of rarities this week but migration is now the big story. Wetlands Complex (MWC) On 4/26 DUNLIN, BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, and LEAST SANDPIPER were seen in the main pool. Madison County On 4/26 30+ EVENING GROSBEAKS were still being seen on Paradise Road in southern Madison County. There may be a possibility for breeding. Derby Hill Derby Hill had some big days this past week. 4/26 produced 4105 hawks and 4/26 had 3976, mostly BROAD-WINGED HAWKS. 4/21 and 25 had a SANDHILL CRANE. Oswego County The lake watch at Phillips Point on Oneida Lake was slow this week but still has SURF and WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS in small numbers. Migrants arriving this week: This was a very active week for new arrivals including RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD in 2 locations. The others are: COMMOM MOORHEN, SPOTTED SANDPIPER, DUNLIN, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, CHIMNEY SWIFT, LEAST FLYCATCHER, GREAT-CRESTED FLYCATCHER, YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, WARBLING VIREO, BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, GRAY CATBIRD, BLUE-WINGED WARBLER, NASHVILLE WARBLER, YELLOW WARBLER, CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, and BOBOLINK. Road throughout the week. No sign of the mate yet. Oswego County The lake watch from Phillips Point on Oneida Lake
this week had all 3 SCOTERS and RED-NECKED GREBE as well as the more
common waterfowl. Derby Hill Flights were very good this past week. The BROAD-WINGED
HAWK flight is in full flight and GOLDEN EAGLES are seen regularly.
Unusual species were BLACK VULTURE on 4/16 and 2 SANDHILL CRANES
on both 4/17 and 4/18. Migrants returning this week include: |
